Group Travel on The Kent & East Sussex Railway
WELCOME to the Educational Visits page!
As
a Registered Educational Charity, The Kent and East Sussex Railway is
a stimulating and worthwhile venue for an educational visit.
Our projects are supported by and have been developed in conjunction with South-East Grid for Learning and Kent County Council.
Many children have never had the opportunity to travel by train, and one of the purposes of such a visit would be to enable children to know at first-hand the unique historical experience of travelling on a steam train.
Linking closely with the requirements of the History National Curriculum, we offer the following:
An Evacuation Experience Day
Tuesday 20th - Thursday 22nd MAY 2008
Linking closely with the teaching suggestions outlined in the QCA scheme of work for History:
Unit 9: What was it like for children in the Second World War
- Why were children evacuated?
-
What was it like to be an evacuee?
We are grateful for the help of the Medway Evacuee Reunion Group and the National Evacuee Reunion Association who provide real-life evacuees to travel on the 1 ¾ hour return steam train journey down the line to Bodiam and back whilst recounting their stories.

A Victorian Experience Day
Linking closely with the teaching suggestions outlined in the QCA scheme of work for History:
Unit 12: How did life change in our locality in Victorian times?
3. How did the arrival/expansion of the railways affect our area?
The railway and museum facilities at Tenterden are ideal venues to help pupils address and explore how and why those changes occurred.
The day starts with a 1 ¾ hour return steam train journey down the line to Bodiam and back. Leaving the main station at Tenterden at 10:40 or 11:45, the children return around two hours later having eaten their packed lunches on the train.
School parties can also visit the Colonel Stephens Museum, the railway museum here at Tenterden Station, dedicated to the life and work of Colonel Stephens, founder of the Kent and East Sussex Railway. Click here to link to the Colonel Stephens Museum website
