OPEN DAYS Saturday 14th - Sunday 15th February
The
first weekend of operation in 2004 saw the Kent & East Sussex Railway,
Tenterden busy with visitors. Over 750 people and four dogs over the
two-day event travelled between Tenterden and Rolvenden Station and
took a close look behind the scenes. Engineering departments whose doors
are usually closed were keen to show the many visitors exactly what
happens therein 364 days a year. Not only did the Locomotive and Carriage & Wagon
Departments throw open their doors
but
visitors were given a tour of the Wealden Pullman, the railway's luxury
dining train, a behind the scenes view of the catering department, visits
to a signal box and free entry to Colonel Stephen's Museum.
Of
course there was a purpose in doing all this. The railway needs around
thirty volunteers on a normal running day (if there is such a thing) to
ensure the smooth operation of the train service; guards, drivers, firemen,
signalmen, catering assistants – the list is endless. Bearing in
mind the service operates for 189 days during 2004 it amounts to a colossal
input of 5670 days for one volunteer. Many volunteers were on hand over
the weekend to convey the benefits of volunteering to those interested
but who were unsure about doing it.
